Basic Rules
Please check in on this admin community and the email attached to your AO3 account periodically throughout the event. There may be important announcements or questions, and the event will run smoother if we’re able to get in touch.
Participants must be 18 years old or older. Only one sign-up per participant.
All ships are welcome. That includes incest, underage, and/or dubcon/noncon ships. Please be aware of what you are requesting and offering though.
Be respectful of other participants. Do not badmouth or bash fellow participants or their requests, fics, etc. We’re all here to have a fun, respectful time!
Mods reserve the right to ban participants based on bad behavior in this or other exchanges. We also reserve the right to update the rules if necessary.
Nominations
“Nominations” are how we create a tag set, which allows us to run AO3’s automatic matching for assignments. You can nominate up to 6 fandoms with 10 relationships each. All relationship tags must be in the format Character 1/Character 2 (or 1/2/3 etc), indicating a romantic or sexual relationship.
Gen or platonic relationships are outside the scope of this exchange.
Crossovers:
Crossovers go into the designated "Crossover Fandom." The format must be "Character A (fandom 1)/Character B (fandom 2). Ex: "Sherlock Holmes (BBC Sherlock)/Ash Ketchum (Pokemon)"
Original Work:
Divide original work nominations under separate “fandoms” according to relationship category.
Animal and monster characters are slotted into the gender group. For example, Princess/Dragon under F/F is understood to be a female dragon.
RPF:
Real Person Fiction nominations must be of people famous in their own right -- non-famous spouses or friends of famous people will be rejected. Contemporary RPF nominations must also be of people 18 years or older.
Signups
You can request 3 to 10 fandoms, with 1 to 10 ships and 1 to 2 media per fandom. Numbers for offers are the same.
You can only request or offer the same fandom once, and you may only sign up with one account.
Do Not Wants:
Any “Do Not Wants” -- elements that cannot be included in the gift you receive -- must be clearly labeled and included in the Optional Details box on the signup form in order to be enforceable. While creators are expected to follow letter-only DNWs in good faith, you won’t receive a make-up gift for a DNW violation unless the DNW was listed in your signup.
DNWs should not contradict your officially requested tags. For example, “DNW incest” for a brother/sister request won’t be enforced. DNWs also may not be used to box your creator into one specific scenario (for example “dnw: anything but omegaverse AU” will not be enforced).
Unmatchables:
If your offers don’t match to any requests, the mod will contact you at your AO3-linked email after signups close. You’ll have the opportunity to either add offers or remove your signup; if you don’t reply, your signup will be removed.
If your requests don’t match to any available creators, they’ll be listed on the admin comm as an initial pinch hit.
Assignments
You will receive your assignment by Nov. 5, and it will be due Dec. 9. Assignments must be:
Fanfic must be at least 1000 words long and focus on the requested pairing. Fanart must be at least a clean, finished lineart that features both characters of the requested ship.
Art and Fic must both be shippy in nature, i.e., featuring a romantic and/or sexual relationship between the requested ship, with those characters as the main characters of the piece.
Assignments are secret! Do not publicly post about the details of your assignment until after creator reveals on Dec 28.

Extensions:
Extensions are given on a case by case basis, and must be requested no less than 24 hours before the deadline. If you have an extension and you were defaulted on, you will not go to pinch hits until you have turned in your assignment.
Defaulting:
If you cannot complete your assignment, please hit the "default" button in the AO3 assignments page. You do not need to email us.
If you are a no-show at the deadline (without having defaulted prior to the deadline or without having contacted us about an extension), you will be banned from participating in the next round of Mistletoe Exchange.
Pinch Hits
Pinch hits will be announced on the admin comm. Anyone can claim a pinch hit as long as they have an AO3 account.
Treating
Extra gifts for participants are welcome, whether or not you’re signed up to Mistletoe Exchange! Treats should follow the same guidelines as assignments, but fic treats can be below the minimum word count. Art treats can be sketches so long as they still clearly depict the desired ship.
In the event that a recipient is defaulted on by their assigned writer but has a qualifying treat, the treat will not be automatically upgraded to a main gift unless it’s very close to reveals.
